AVMF: 30 Years and Counting

1973

  • Aspen Valley Medical Foundation established "to engage in all activities intended for the betterment of health care and its effect upon the physical and mental well-being for all inhabitants of the Roaring Fork Valley."
  • Founded by Fred Atkinson and Drs. Russell Scott, Jr., Robert Oden, and Robert Morgen.

1977     

  • Raises $l.5 millionto build a new Aspen Valley Hospital at 0401 Castle Creek Road.

1979

  • Purchases 16 acres of land around Aspen Valley Hospital.
  • Henry L. Stein Memorial Medical Library donated.

1982

  • Establishes Audrey Owings Memorial EMT Scholarship Fund.

1985

  • Endows $250,000 from President's Club funds to meet future medical needs.

1987

  • Establishes Monty Taylor Memorial Fund to help people pay for substance abuse programs.

1989

  • Raises $l.5 million to build the Castle Creek Terrace Assisted Living Facility (now named Whitcomb Terrace) on the hospital campus.
  • Raises $1 million to bring a new CT Scanner to AVH.

1992

  • Purchases the Mid Valley Clinic building in Basalt. Paid $360,000 and sold to AVH for $500,000 in 1998.
  • Opens Aspen Basalt Care Clinic, providing low income people access to health care, with major support from the Medical Foundation.

1993

  • Foundation starts paying Executive Director's full salary, which previously was shared with AVH.
  • Funds Aspen Valley Hospital's Nuclear Medicine Department, brining a cardiologist to the community.

1994

  • Establishes Nancy Davis Neurodiagnostic Center.
  • Establishes Dr. Rodney Kirk Memorial Scholarship for health care professionals.

1995

  • Establishes Wilton Jaffee, Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Aspen Valley Hospital employee education.
  • Finances CEO residence on the hospital campus. AVH later purchased the home  from Foundation.

1996

  • Establishes Prescription Assistance Fund for low-income patients with a lead gift from the Schuss family.  Whip Jones and other donors support the fund.
  • Opens Charles Dowling Nolan, Sr. Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at AVH with support from the Nolan family.

1997

  • Receives largest gift in AVMF history - $7.5 million bequest from the Doris Denker Estate.

1998    

  • Commissions Bentz, Whaley, Flessner to conduct a Development Program Audit, after receiving the Denker bequest. Recommendations focused on strengthening the board and clarifying its roles and responsibilities; improving relations with Aspen Valley Hospital; improving visibility of AVMF in the community; and adding additional staff to more effectively raise and grant funds to the hospital, and community health and human services.
  • Celebrates the  Foundation's 25th anniversary. Foundation founders are honored at the Aspen Health and Fitness Symposium, a weekend-long event sponsored and funded jointly by the Given Institute and AVMF, with a gift from Dr. Al and Trish Nichols.
  • Funds creation of Level III Trauma Center at Aspen Valley Hospital with a generous gift from HRH Prince Bandar.
  • Grants a record $794,881 to AVH and health and human service organizations.

1999

  • Receives $1 million gift from the Benedict Estate.
  • Raised $200,000 for improvements to the helipad at AVH
  • Forms alliance with Neighbor to Neighbor. The Neighbor to Neighbor Board becomes a committee of Foundation and two of its members, John Sarpa and Sue Smedstad, also join the AVMF Board.
  • Dedicates The Dolly Lippman Memorial Hospice Room at AVH.
  • Expands Prescription Assistance Fund to assist patients throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, as well as include emergency dental assistance. Over $14,000 made available to benefit 119 individuals in need.

2000

  • Grants $600,000 to AVH for digital radiography equipment and $300,000 for general operating support.
  • Participates in Planning Process with AVH to determine long-term needs for AVH physical plant - $30 million project identified as the need.
  • Establishes Medical Assistance Fund to provide assistance for individuals who have difficulty paying for necessary or emergent out-patient medical services, tests, equipment, therapy apparatus, procedures and/or treatment.
  • AVMF Board of Directors approves indefinitely the alliance with Neighbor to Neighbor.
  • Raises $1 million from eight donors for new AVH Conference Center.  The Oden Conference Center is named for Dr. Robert Oden, AVMF founder and retired orthopedic surgeon.

2001

  • Grants $500,000 to AVH and begins a $1.5 million fundraising campaign for a new CT Scan and Nuclear Medicine Camera.
  • Grants $464,000 to health and human service organziations.
  • Receives a $300,000 grant from The Colorado Trust to begin valley-wide system of Palliative Care called Caring Connections.
  • AVMF conducts Community Health and Human Service Needs Assessment that identified mental health and substance abuse issues as most critical needs.

2002

  • Grants $351,900 to AVH and $472,447 to health and human service organizations.
  • Grants $18,831 in Direct Assistance to individuals with dental, prescription and medical needs, and $93,753 in scholarships for health care professionals.
  • Creates VIA - Valley Information and Assistance - connecting people in need to community resources.
  • Helps establish a new Breast Health Program at AVH, including a Patient Liaison and additional advanced diagnostic equipment.

2003

  • Receives $250,000 bequest from the estate of Rose Stanton.
  • Participates in AVH Strategic Planning Process.
  • Grants $504,000 to AVH and $557,000 to health and human service organizations.
  • Receives request from AVH to raise $4M of a $10M remodel project. AVMF conducts a Feasibility Study with a national professional fundraising consulting firm and determined that although large sums of funds could be raised, donors do not give to retire debt. AVMF proposes raising $30M for a comprehensive remodel/expansion of AVH.  No campaign has yet begun.
  • Celebrates 30th Anniversary of AVMF with formal dinner and auction at St. Regis Hotel.
  • Establishes special funds for AVH Cancer Guides and The Right Door.

2004

  • Grants $358,944 to AVH and $413,663 to health and human service organizations.
  • Grants $37,989 in health care education scholarship awards to 16 individuals.
  • Grants $23,195 in Direct Assistance to individuals with dental, prescription and medical needs.
  • Receives a $500,000 unrestricted donation from Dick and Sophie Butera.
  • Board and staff Adopt 'Strategic Directions for Aspen Valley Medical Foundation.'
  • Presents Dr. Richard Kogan's Music & the Mind concert, featuring the life and work of Robert Schumann, at Harris Concert Hall, co-sponsored by AVMF and the Aspen Music Festival and School.

2005

  • Presents the first AVMF Health Conference, The Divided Self:  Crisis in Paradise, focusing on substance abuse and suicide.
  • Grants $497,226 to Aspen Valley Hospital
  • Grants $411,255 to health and human service organizations
  • Grants $75,927 in scholarship awards to 34 local health care professionals.
  • Grants $29,373 in Direct Assistance to 233 individuals with dental, prescription and dental needs.

2006

  • Presents the second AVMF Health Conference, Living Courageously in an Age of Anxiety.
  • Grants $1,107,023 to Aspen Valley Hospital -  $357,000 for Digital Mammography and $750,000 for 64 Slice CT scanner.
  • Presents ten deserving AVH employees with $10,000 each, contributed by the Dick Butera Distinguished Service Foundation.
  • Welcomes 57 new members to the AVMF Presidents Club, bringing the total number of Presidents Club members to 133.
  • Grants $385,000 to health and human service organizations.
  • Grants $69,000 in scholarship awards to 38 local health care professionals.
  • Grants $38,000 in Direct Assistance to individuals with dental, prescription and dental needs.

2007

  • Presents the first annual Mental Health Convocation for local mental health professionals.
  • Co-sponsors the Health Forum at the Aspen Institute.
  • Leases a building in Basalt to establish a new facility for health care in the mid-valley, the Aspen-Basalt Healthcare Center.
  • Grants $913,000 to Aspen Valley Hospital - $847,000 for a new MRI, and $66,000 to pay half the salary for the patient representative position for 3 years.
  • Grants $436,500 to health and human service organizations.
  • Grants $73,000 in scholarship awards to 24 local health care professionals.
  • Grants $39,000 in Direct Assistance to individuals with dental, prescription and dental needs.

2008

  • Presents the second Annual Mental Health Convocation for local mental health professionals.
  • Co-sponsors Mini-Med School, a program of the University of Colorado Medical School, with the Given Institute.
  • Renovates the Aspen-Basalt Healthcare Center building for  AVH's After-Hours Care Center and the new Hospice of the Valley.  Office space is shared by health and human service organizations serving the mid-valley, and meeting rooms are available to the community.
  • Grants $1,042,524 to Aspen Valley Hospital - $860,000 for electronic medical records; $57,524 for radiographic equipment for the new After-Hours Care Center in Basalt;  and $125,000 for oncology software.
  • Grants $442,600 to health and human service organizations.
  • Grants $100,000 in scholarship awards to 40 local health care professionals.
  • Grants $36,000 in Direct Assistance to individuals with dental, prescription and dental needs.
  • Receives $1,000,000 donation from an anonymous donor to establishing a new Hospice service for the valley.
  • Assists in establishing Hospice of the Valley after Valley View Hospital's Roaring Fork Hospice closed its doors.  AVMF provides significant financial and administrative support.
  • Assists in establishing Aspen Homeless Shelter, administering funds and providing support.
